Williams<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.2;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Increasingly, in cases involving the police, we are observing instances where a single perceived criminal act leads to a second unlawful act by a different individual<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">culminating in two <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">alleged <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">crimes running concurrently, each feeding off the other<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> creating grief, anger and pain <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> in many cases<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, the<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> destruction of entire neighborhoods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The tragedy of this complex situation is often found <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">when<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> one individual <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">is<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> viewed as a glorified victim and the other <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">is<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> seen as a<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> unforgiveable villain. Neither description contains an adequate<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">truth. Unfortunately<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> we find ourselves living with an agenda driven news media, where truth is sometimes camouflaged, evaded or completely denied<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, t<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">hereby leaving the public with the inability to understand or comprehend the whole of any matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Because of the toxic social and political atmosphere in which we live<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">certain principles of right and wrong have been completely abandoned, leaving the adherence to the rule of law to individual<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and sometimes <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">mob<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> interpretation thereof<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, leading<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> to disastrous results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In some schools of logic<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> there is something referred to as the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">causative effect<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, which tries to explain the cause and result<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">ing effect<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> of certain human conduct<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">. Simply put: If Party A had not robbed Party B, Party C would not be accused of using excessive or lethal force <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">i<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">n the apprehension of Party A. Any complete disapproval of Party C\u2019s actions (which may have been criminal) without the consideration of Party A\u2019s conduct would be premature. It is within this premature arena that the \u201cvictims<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">villains\u201d are defined. All acts, whether good or bad, produce consequences<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> that<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> must be answered to<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> l<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">iving in a civilized society demand<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">s s<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">uch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Police work by its very nature can be very hazardous, and they are often caught in situations where a split-second decision regarding their life and the life of others must be made. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">It should be made perfectly clear that <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">any and all<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> misconduct on the part of an arresting police officer should be dealt with quickly, completely and fairly. We know that there are some bad cops that do bad things<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> if criminally convicted they should be sent to prison.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> To make sense of this age of rage, where police brutality has become the centerpiece of it all, there must be a recognition that there is a problem here<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, a<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> problem that happens to be two-fold<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">One part<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> centers around police conduct and attitudes<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> which covers a wide range of issues<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> running from improper <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">v<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">etting and job training to pure old-fashioned racism. Admittedly, the history of law enforcement in this country<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> as it has been applied to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lacks is questionable at best<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and alarmingly atrocious at its worst. The volume of traffic stops without cause, the planting and falsification of evidence<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> to the shooting of unarmed <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lacks<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">are examples of a long train of abusive behavior that has been administered and inflicted upon the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Black<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The second part, which is as problematic as the first, involves young <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack men who find themselves trapped, trying to navigate <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">through <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">a culture that has ill-prepared them for the task of learning life\u2019s conditions and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> concepts of<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> being accountable and responsible for their own actions and conduct. Being void of these principles, one develops an attitude of distrust and disrespect for authority at all levels<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and when asked to conform, the attitude tends to be one of combativeness and confrontation<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">o<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">ften creating bitter results<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, that we will<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> later <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">explore <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">in this discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Every bad confrontation between police and a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack person is not necessarily caused by a \u201cracist cop\u201d responding. People call the police because <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">they<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> fear <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">or <\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">believe<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> a crime is being committed or<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> that<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> a domestic disturbance is taking place. In most instances<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> the matter of race does not become an issue. If all goes well, things are resolved routinely. It is when one or both parts of the problem described above comes into play that trouble starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">There were many scenes of racial unrest involving the police that were flashed across our TV screens this past summer. However, there <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">were<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> two scenes, one national in scope and another local, that <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">ep<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">itomizes<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> the problem being discussed. First, the matter of George Floyd <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">which <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">created a national uproar. It is <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">very difficult<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> to conclude that the death of Mr. Floyd, a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack man who died in the custody of Minneapolis police, was not<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> to some degree<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> racially motivated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">As seen on worldwide media, office Derek Chauvin pressed his knee, with <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">full weight of his body, against Mr. Floyd\u2019s neck for more than nine minutes while three <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">other<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> (none <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack) officers stood idly by as Mr. Floyd struggled for his breath and his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Coming to a proper conclusion, one would have to say officer Chauvin acted in the manner he did because he did not place equal value on the life of Mr. Floyd as a fellow human being. Under similar conditions<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> Adolph Hitler or Jack <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">t<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">he Ripper would not have received such hideous treatment at the knee of officer Chauvin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">In police work, as in all other facets of life, undesirable racial attitudes cannot be eradicated by decree, but they can be detected through proper vetting and observance<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and when such attitudes are discovered they should be dealt with immediately through proper training or dismissal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The law enforcement side<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">of this problem is one of proper management and enforcement more than anything else. Bad attitudes in a work environment, if properly checked, can be changed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The following is an edited news account of a police shooting<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> of a young Black man<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> that took place in Detroit on July 10, 2020. The story was supplied by WWJ <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Newsradio<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> 950.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0pt 72pt 0pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">A young man who allegedly struggled with and fired shots at Detroit <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">p<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">olice was shot and killed by officers on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0pt 72pt 0pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the shooting happened on the city\u2019s northwest side<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> at around 12:30 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0pt 72pt 0pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Police officers, who were investigating a weekend block party shooting that left three people dead and five wounded, were arresting a man with a felony warrant when another man approached. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0pt 72pt 0pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0pt 72pt 0pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Craig said video shows there was a struggle between an officer and a second man, identified as Hakim Littleton, who it turned out was armed<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> According to officers, Littleton said something to the effect <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">of:<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> I am not going to let them take my man<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201c(<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">T<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">he suspect) then removed a small caliber blue steel semi-automatic pistol and began to fire a number of rounds at the officer over his shoulder,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201d <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Craig told reporters. \u201cAs that was occurring the officer pushed him away and that\u2019s when the additional officers, fearing for their life <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> the fact that he was actively shooting <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> they fired several rounds,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">striking the suspect<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0pt 72pt 0pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Littleton was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers were shot. Chief Craig said there is some \u201cgang involvement\u201d regarding <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">all of<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> the suspects involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">This shooting, as described above, was <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">actually shown<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> on local television.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; height: 1em;\"><span style=\"display: none;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2003\u2003George Floyd, 46. Hakim Littleton, 20. Both of their lives tragically ended. Floyd\u2019s allegedly at the hands of rogue police. Littleton\u2019s, in my opinion, by<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> way<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> of impulsive suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">As noted elsewhere in this article, there is a serious problem among a measurable number of our young <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack men when it comes to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">responding properly<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">to<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> authority at any level. As a former educator and probation officer, I\u2019ve seen this malady birth itself in the late 196<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">s<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> \u2013<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> where a visit to the principal\u2019s office would solve most disciplinary problems<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">to now<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> whe<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> armed<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> in-house security teams <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">must patrol <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">the hallways of some of our <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">schools<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> whe<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">re now<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> a request by police for one\u2019s driv<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">er\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> license may lead to a confrontation resulting in death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Time and space do not allow me to get into an almost meaningless discussion<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> centered<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> around condemning and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">bemoaning<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> why slavery and all of its offs<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">hoots<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> have led to this sad state of affairs, where young <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lacks all around the country, to varying degrees, are resorting to a form of impulsive suicide because they have not been taught that confrontation is a tool of last resort<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">not the first<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">t<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">hey haven\u2019t learned that <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">self-respect<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, self-preservation<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and personal responsibility for one\u2019s actions are the only avenues that lead to meaningful manhood and success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">This aspect of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">police brutality<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> problem has been largely ignored by society as a whole and has been left to resolve itself at the side of and in rear seats of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">police <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">squad <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">cars, where the results have been devastating. Politicians, social activists and the local and national news media have shamefully been quiet on this issue. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Hopefully<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> this will change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">I commend the sports world for its newfound interest in why and what happens to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack people, but emblems on the side of helmets and slogans on the back of uniforms promoting social justice <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> equality do not <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">offer,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> in any minor or major way<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> solutions to the problem. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">While<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> well inten<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">tioned<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, these are nothing more than symbolic gestures designed to tell the world<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">W<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">e have been awaken<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">ed<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">we care.\u201d Ultimately<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> these gestures will reveal themselves for what <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">they are: a form of social pa<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">cification<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">letting America feel good about itself again <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">while<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> having solved nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">This being said<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> major<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> sports leagues and associations still offer the best hope for reaching the troubled <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">B<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">lack youth in this c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">ountry<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">There <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">are 92 teams that make up the N<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">a<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">tional Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Major League Baseball (MLB). The estimated <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">combined<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> value of these 92 clubs is in excess of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">$20<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">0.84<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> billion, according to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><em>statista.com<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> as of 2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">. They are all, for the most part, privately owned by very wealthy individuals, which gives them a great deal of flexibility in what they can do and what they can spend <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">and they spend plenty!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Taken as a whole, the players<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">that make up these teams are largely men of color. Viewed demographically, all but two or three cities in which these teams are located contain large black populations. Taking these key factors into consideration, much can be done in providing the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">type of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">long-term, hands-on<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">leadership that is so urgently needed<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">in<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> help<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">ing<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> to correct this crippling problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">We are talking about meaningful commitment here<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">not symbolism. All three leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB) and their owners have made strong statements about their commitment to racial justice and equality<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> in this country<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">. The players have been even more vociferous about this matter. So<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">let\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> go to wor<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">k.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The program would work as follows: <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">A<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> team in each city would partner with a local school district in adopting an underserved\/underperforming middle or high<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">school for a four<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">year period. The leagues, through their respective teams, would assume the responsibility for repairing and maintaining the school buildings, including the gym, football field<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> swimming pool, etc. A first<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">class library would be maintained. Computers for every need would be made available. A nutritiou<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">s<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">focused <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">cafeteria would be maintained, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">insuring<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> that no student goes hungry. Teachers<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> salaries and other administrative costs would remain the responsibility of the districts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Locations like the city of New York, Chicago<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">L<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">o<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">s Angel<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">e<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">s, for example, could end up sponsoring three to six schools because of the number of teams located in their cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; padding-top: 0; margin-bottom: 6pt; padding-bottom: 0; line-height: 1.8; text-indent: 36pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Until now, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">we\u2019ve<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> looked at the deep financial commitment the leagues and owners would have to make <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">toward<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> this effort. But <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">in order for<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> this to work, a much deeper commitment of time and involvement would be required of the players. Apart from being key intermediaries between leagues and schools, they will become counselors and mentors; they will become assistants to principals; they will become assistants to coaches<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">; <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">they become a part of the security team.
